Reading Marx

Food for thought

All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses, his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind.

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, The Communist Manifesto, London 1848

History and Definition

[…] alle Begriffe, in denen sich ein ganzer Prozess semiotisch zusammenfasst, entziehen sich der Definition; definierbar ist nur das, was keine Geschichte hat.

[…] all concepts which semiotically condense a whole process elude definition; only that which has no history can be defined.

Friedrich Nietzsche (Genealogie der Moral II: 13)

Freedom and Religion

“What do you mean by being free? Freedom for me is not something that you can roam anywhere you want. Freedom must be within the definition of a certain framework. Because I don’t think we are able to run around and get everything. That freedom means nothing. You must really frame yourself where you want to go and what you want to do”.

Shafi, a young Malaysian fundamentalist in V.S. Naipaul, Among the Believers. An Islamic Journey, Penguin, London 1981, pp. 216-217.

The Art of Insulting

A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease”.
“That depends, Sir” – said Disraeli – “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress”.

A Rational Choice

As the philosopher John Rawls has reemphasized his A Theory of Justice, we do not vote for Social Security and welfare assistance out of love for Washington civil servants. Being human and realizing we are subject to the unknown perils of unemployment and destitution, we cannily opt for the mutual reinsurances of the modern welfare state, knowing that, but for grace of God, the bell that tolls could be tolling for us. Your typhoid is my typhoid and we are all, so to speak, citizens of the same Hiroshima.

Paul Samuelson, Economics from the Heart, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers, San Diego 1983, p. 55.

Constitution and Economic Theory

... a Constitution is not intended to embody a particular economic theory, whether of paternalism and the organic relation of the citizen to the State or of laissez faire. It is made for people of fundamentally differing views, and the accident of our finding certain opinions natural and familiar, or novel, and even shocking, ought not to conclude our judgement upon the question whether statutes embodying them conflict with the Constitution of the United States.

Mr. Justice Holmes, dissenting, in Lochner v. New York 198 U.S. 45 (1905)

A plan to resist all planning...

A plan to resist all planning may be better than its opposite, but it belongs to the same style of politics.

Michael Oakeshott, Rationalism in Politics and Other Essays, Liberty Press, Indianapolis (Ind.) 1991, p. 26.

When statesman gravely say...

When Statesman gravely say 'We must be realistic',
The chances are they're weak, and, therefore, pacifistic,
But when they speak of Principles, look out: perhaps
Their generals are already poring over maps.

W.H. Auden, Collected Shorter Poems 1927-1957, Faber & Faber, London 1996, p. 191.

Precaution

I never dared be radical when young
For fear it would make me conservative when old.

The Poetry of Robert Frost, ed. by Edward Connery Lathem, Vintage Books, London 2001, p. 308.
